THAT DAY

The Doors at the Smothers Brothers Show, December 15, 1968

The Doors turned down a lot of TV shows, not wanting to appear in family entertainment and hating the censorship that Ed Sullivan tried to impose on them in 1967.

On the other hand, they accept without hesitation to participate in the emission of the brothers Tommy and Dick Smother! It is a recent program (it began in 1967) and is clearly anti-conformist: there is no hesitation in criticizing the war in Vietnam or the clashes between police and students: moreover, the CBS channel stopped the show in 1969 in because of its overly anti-establishment tone.

The Doors rehearsed on December 5, recorded on December 6, so the show aired on December 15 with an audience of 27.1 million. Wild Child and Touch Me were played semi-live only with Jim's voice being live.

2 stories:

- Robby's black eye: they say it was a bar fight, then a car accident but recently Robby admitted it was while fooling around with Jim shortly before the recording.

- We also notice Jim's excellent miss at the beginning of the second verse: caught with his maracas he forgets the "c'mon c'mon c'mon" and barely catches up
