DID YOU KNOW ?

The Doors, in the beginning, Venice Beach

July 8, 1965, Venice Beach in Los Angeles, CA:

(Jim Morrison, 21, recently graduated with a passable D+ in cinematography at UCLA, had planned to fly to New York... Yet there he is, sitting on Venice Beach, loose sheets by his side Since the end of the school year Jim, unemployed, lives on the roof of a building nearby...)

(Ray Manzarek, a former classmate of Jim's at UCLA, is walking on the beach. He's settled down a few blocks from here with his girlfriend Dorothy Fujikawa. He's also graduated in cinematography. He's been acting for a few months in his brother's band "Rick and the Ravens.")

*On the horizon the sun is setting over the Pacific Ocean, Jim Morrison is there, lying in the sand...*

Ray Manzarek - "Gosh, Morrison! Hey man, what the hell are you doing?"

Jim Morrison - "Oh! Manzarek, it's you!"

RM - "So Morrison, what are you becoming dude? Did you stay in LA after all?"

JM - "Oei! I said to myself that I'll let the summer pass. I live with a friend not far away, finally on the roof of his pad. It's a nice and calm corner. And you then Manzarek, what new?"

RM - "Oh! I moved to the neighborhood with Dorothy. We live in a small bungalow."

*Ray then notices Jim's papers*

RM - "What are you writing? A screenplay like at UCLA?"

JM - "Oh no! You know I think I'm going to leave that aside for a while. These are lyrics for an imaginary Rock concert!"

RM - "Seriously, do you write lyrics? Will you sing me one to see?"

JM - "It's because...I'm shy...But OK."

*Jim closes his eyes, in his right hand sand slips between his fingers. He suddenly sings the tune of "Moonlight Drive."*

JM - "Let's swim to the moon uh uh
Let's climb to the tide..."

RM - "Wow! Your thing is crazy man! I play keyboards in my bro's band, would you like to join us? You could sing your lyrics and we'd make a million dollars!"

JM - "Ok, but the band has to be called THE DOORS!"

RM - "The Doors? the doors of perception, Huxley's book?"

JM - "In truth the title is taken from a verse by William Blake: "If the doors of perception were purified, all things would appear to man as they are...Infinite." "

RM - "We will then be called, THE DOORS"
