Fillmore East - 105 2nd Avenue / East 6th Street Manhattan, New York City, NY
The Fillmore East was a former concert hall located in the East Village (Manhattan) neighborhood of New York.
Opened on March 8, 1968 by Bill Graham, in a building housing an old cinema left in ruins, the place quickly became a Mecca of Rock.
Taking up the concept of the "Fillmore West" located in San Francisco, the "Fillmore East" located on the East Coast saw artists such as Frank Zappa, Led Zeppelin, The Who, Jimi Hendrix, Pink Floyd perform between 1968 and 1971. ..etc.
Very often the bands are scheduled to play two concerts in the same day.
The DOORS performed there shortly after the hall opened to the public, on March 22 and 23, 1968.
Finally, faced with the competition present in the concert industry, Graham decided to close the Fillmore East after a last concert was given there on June 27, 1971 by "The Allman Brothers Band", resident group of the prestigious hall.
NOWADAYS :
After hosting a private gay club in the 80s, the building has been shared between a bank and an apartment complex since 2017.
The group Live Nation, organizer of concerts and numerous festivals (including in Europe: Rock Werchter, Main Square Festival...), has since brought the name "Fillmore" out of oblivion by opening "The Fillmore New York at Irving Plaza " in the square of the same name on April 11, 2007.
