"Sunset Sound Recorders" - 6650 Sunset Boulevard, Hollywood, Los Angeles, CA
[THE STORY OF THE PLACE]
Located in the heart of Sunset Boulevard, the "Sunset Sound Recorders" recording studios celebrated their 50th anniversary in 2012...
Toots Camarata is since 1956, the main artistic director and musical producer of the label "Disneyland Records". Despite an important activity, he faced many financial difficulties during the year 1957. However, he suggested to Walt Disney to found his own recording studio.
The great Walt refuses the offer but nevertheless proposes to Camarata to found his own.
In 1958, Camarata bought a former car parts store located at No. 6650 on the famous Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood. Quickly, he transforms the place into a recording studio.
The "Sunset Sound Recorders" officially opened its doors in 1962. Although the independent studio initially centered its activity around Disney productions, it quickly opened its doors to all artists. In sixteen years of association, more than 300 albums will be produced by Toots "Tutty" Camarata!
Renowned artists come to record in the premises of "Sunset Sound": The Doors, Janis Joplin, Bob Dylan, Led Zeppelin, Alice Cooper, Miles Davis and many others...the list is still long.
In 1981, Camarata purchased "The Sound Factory", another Los Angeles recording studio founded by "Moonglow Records". He died on April 13, 2005 at the age of 91.
[THE DOORS AT "SUNSET SOUND RECORDERS"]
In August 1966, THE DOORS accompanied by Bruce Botnick, the group's sound engineer, entered the "Sunset Sound Recorders" and recorded their first album produced by Paul Rothchild on the "Elektra Records" label there in just 6 days!
The following year, between February 7 and August 24, 1967, the DOORS returned to record their second album "Strange Days" there! The songs that had not been selected for the first album finally ended up on this second opus.
[TODAY]
