MYTHICAL PLACES

Whiskey A Go Go - 8901 Sunset Boulevard, Los Angeles, CA

From May 23 to August 21, 1966, The Doors were the resident band of Whiskey A Go Go, the now legendary nightclub located on Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles.

Discovered in a nearby club by Ronnie Haran-Mellen, the Whiskey's talent scout. The latter allowed them to open for artists like Buffalo Springfield, Love, Them, The Turtles and Johnny Rivers. During these few months of 1966, the Doors will forge the legendary image of the group, playing 2 sets each evening.

The Doors captivate! so much so that on August 10, 1966, Jac Holzman, the president of the Label Elektra Records returned there for three evenings in a row and dispatched his producer Paul Rothchild across the United States to come and admire the 15th of the month, the new local sensation. On August 18, 1966, The Doors officially signed a contract with this Label.

Jim Morrison then became more and more familiar with the scene, gradually getting rid of his shyness by now facing the audience. He does not hesitate to improvise long poems in the middle of the pieces. Thus, on August 21, 1966, under the influence of LSD, Jim chanted for the first time the famous Oedipal metaphor on "The End": "Father? Yes son? I want to kill you. Mother, I want to f** k you!" (Father, yes son? I want to kill you. Mother, I want to fuck you!) for several minutes, he repeats while skipping "Kill the Father, Fuck the mother." It's too much! the manager of the room, shocked and annoyed by the words of the young singer, literally kicks the group out!

The Doors would return the following year, in January 1967 with a first album which would meet with great success and which would feature the track "The End" and its famous and controversial Oedipal metaphor.

Whiskey A Go Go is still open to this day. It offers a program more centered on Heavy Metal music but remains a reference in the list of the most famous nightclubs on the planet.
