Released on November 17, 1978, "An American Prayer" is officially Jim Morrison's only posthumous studio album!

The album is mostly composed of poems recorded by Jim Morrison on December 8, 1970, his 27th birthday and set to music by surviving DOORS members during 1978.

Some of the music on the album is original, while others are excerpts from existing band music (Peace Frog, Riders on the Storm, etc). Bits of sound archives and concerts sometimes come to decorate the whole between two texts.
