Tom Dicillo's "When You're Strange" premieres at the Sundance Film Festival, January 17, 2009
"When You're Strange," the documentary about The Doors, premiered at the Sundance Film Festival on January 17, 2009.
Award-winning writer and director Tom DiCillo's film unveils never-before-seen historical footage of the illustrious rock quartet and offers new insight into the groundbreaking impact of their music and legacy. The artwork also reveals for the first time officially, images from the 1969 film directed by Jim Morrison "HWY: An American Pastoral".
The film is narrated in voice-over by Johnny Depp.
Doors keyboardist Ray Manzarek said of the documentary, "it will be the real story of The Doors" and that the film will be "the anti-Oliver Stone", referring to the 1991 film about the group that Stone carried out, and which aroused numerous criticisms.
Doors fans and several people who knew Morrison, including Doors guitarist Robby Krieger, believe the film paints a more accurate portrait of Morrison than the 1991 biopic: "I think when you see the Oliver Stone film, you're amazed at the quality of Val Kilmer's acting for sure, but, you know, the problem with this movie is that the script was a bit stupid... It doesn't really reflect how Jim was at all. I think When You're Strange gives you a much better idea of how his mind worked."
The film was nominated for an Emmy Award in the category "best non-fiction series" after it aired on PBS. In December 2010, the film was this time nominated for a Grammy Award in the category "best long-form video", an award subsequently won in February 2011.
"When You're Strange" by Tom DiCillo is available in physical DVD and Blu Ray format as well as on several VOD platforms like Amazon Prime or mk2 .
