On January 24, 1968, Jim Morrison, Pamela Courson and her sister Judy attended a performance of Beat poet Michael McClure's play "The Beard" at the Warner Playhouse in Los Angeles.

First performed in San Francisco in December 1965, McClure's play is built around a sensual exchange between a comedian and an actress playing the characters of Billy The Kid and Jean Harlow respectively.

A film version of "The Beard" was shot in May 1966 by Andy Warhol starring Gerard Malanga as Billy The Kid and Mary Woronov as Jean Harlow.

The play's initial staging proved so controversial due to the presence of sexually explicit elements that it prompted police intervention and months of litigation, before the San Francisco Superior Court ruled against it. abandon the case and that the performances cannot resume.

Michael McClure, Morrison's friend who convinced him to publish his writings died on May 4, 2020 at the age of 87...
